Thirty degrees below – and at least a hundred dead: Europe's big freeze

by Shaun Walker

With record snowfalls, icy winds, and thousands of people trapped in remote villages, much of Central and Eastern Europe is in the grip of a cold snap that has caused more than 100 deaths. Temperatures in parts of Ukraine and other Eastern European countries are hovering around -30C (-22F).

The Adriatic islands of Croatia have had a rare dusting of snow, while in Romania, parts of the Black Sea have frozen over. Several towns in Bulgaria have recorded their lowest temperatures since records began more than a century ago,

At least 11,000 people were trapped in mountain villages in Serbia yesterday as ice and snow made roads impassable. Emergency crews were working to gain access to deliver supplies as the country tackled its coldest winter for decades.

"The situation is dramatic. The snow is up to 5m high in some areas. You can only see rooftops," said Milorad Dramacanin, a member of a helicopter evacuation team. Among those airlifted to safety were mourners who had travelled to a funeral but were unable to get back.

In neighbouring Bosnia, supplies were flown to isolated villages, where locals were forced to dig paths into thick snow that resembled tunnels, and said they had little hope of proper access to the outside world until spring. Some villages have been without electricity for days.

The worst-hit country is Ukraine, where dozens of homeless people have died. Authorities said yesterday that 63 people had died in the past few days, with 41 dying on the streets, eight in hospitals and 14 at home. Nearly 1,000 have been hospitalised with hypothermia or frostbite because the temperature has consistently remained below -20C and on some nights has dipped below -30C. Shelters for the homeless across are handing out tea, coffee and pork fat, while hospitals have been told not to discharge homeless patients.

There have also been deaths in Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. In Poland, the victims have also mainly been homeless people, primarily those who fell asleep in unheated buildings. A further 11 people have died since Friday from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Polish fire service. The victims had been using makeshift charcoal heaters in an attempt to warm up.

In many parts of Russia, extreme winter temperatures are normal, and life in cities is continuing more or less as usual, albeit with rather more grumbling. In St Petersburg, where temperatures have dipped below -30C this week days, experts have advised residents to change their diet to keep healthy. "You must not eat fresh vegetables in winter, especially during the peak cold periods," said Pavel Gorbenko, a professor of nutrition. He suggested that Russians should increase their intake of fermented cabbage, as well as use heavy fats such as lard, rather than cooking with light oils. "In winter in -20C, a person cannot survive on sunflower oil, he will either get ill or will slowly fade away," Mr Gorbenko said.

In Siberia, temperatures were even lower, with some regions dipping as low as -50C. In the city of Barnaul, all long-distance buses were cancelled; the drivers said if they broke down en route it would mean certain death for all the passengers.

Virtual reality contact lenses that beam images directly into your eyes could be on sale in 2014

* Equivalent to a 240-inch 3D television from 10 feet
* Can layer 'augmented reality' information over world
* Company also working with U.S. army

By Rob Waugh

Contact lenses which focus 3D screens directly into people's eyeballs could be on sale as early as 2014, says U.S. company Innovega.

The tiny 'screens' sit directly on users' eyeballs and work with a pair of lightweight glasses with a built-in translucent screen.

The experience is equivalent to a 240-inch television viewed at a distance of 10 feet, says Innovega's CEO Steve Willey

The devices can 'pair' with smartphones and portable game devices to deliver up-close video - or switch to a translucent 'augmented reality' view, where computer information is layered over the world we know.

Crucially, the devices can be worn while moving about - previous bulky 'VR headsets' have blindfolded their users and can only be used sitting down.

The effect could be similar to the lenses worn by Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

The company is also developing hi-tech lenses for use by American soldiers, feeding battlefield information directly into their eyes.

DARPA - the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, thought of as the American military's 'mad scientist' wing - has been funding research on 'soldier mounted displays' for some time.

It's now working on 'iOptik' lenses with Innovega.

The lenses, made with nano-scale engineering processes, work as a hi-tech focusing device, which allows Innovega's glasses to be considerably less bulky than previous devices.

The lenses themselves require no power, and thus can sit safely on the eyeball.

Bombshell: Wycliffe insiders admit allah used in Bible translations as "cultural bridge"

by Bill Wilson

Verified sources within Wycliffe have contacted The Daily Jot confirming that Wycliffe has replaced God the Father with allah in many Arabic translations of the Bible and Bible resources. The sources, who took great care to remain unidentified due to fears of harsh retribution, collectively are "torn as to what they should do. Do they stay and try to stand for right or resign in protest?" One source summed up the situation, writing, "many of the intellectuals in Wycliffe are convinced that this is just cultural bridge building and Western Christians are not sophisticated enough to understand what they do. Therefore, they are keeping it as secret as possible."

Missionaries from around the world have confirmed that Wycliffe has indeed replaced God the Father with allah in many translations. Most are thankful for the Jot exposing the error. Some have been been critical, nonetheless, they confirmed that allah is used instead of God the Father. One wrote: "I am sorry to say that you haven't a clue of what you speak. Had you asked anyone with even the faintest familiarity with the millions of Arab Christians...you would have discovered that Allah is the word used in every Arabic Bible translation ever produced; and that millions of Arab Christians pour out their hearts in worship and intercession to Allah, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." It's worse than we thought!

Pastors in Turkey are urging that a new translation replacing God the Father and Son of God with Muslim-friendly words is "a very, very, very serious error and mistranslation." A missionary there said: "This is a big controversy here in Turkey. All the Turkish pastors oppose this new translation. They have asked Frontiers to not distribute this book in Turkey, but Frontiers refused. They refused to stop working on it. This is very arrogant. This is being done to "reach" Muslims. We should preach the Gospel to Muslims in power with signs following' using the example of the Apostle Paul. This method works and is scriptural." One missionary said Wycliffe reps fought to leave out some 100 verses of another translation.

2 Peter 2:1 says, "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction." Multiple independent sources confirm that Wycliffe leadership believes it knows best about how to translate the Bible and how to treat the Muslim issue regarding the Holy Scriptures. Even some missionaries are convinced that using allah for YHVH is the right thing to do. There has been a tremendous compromise of the Word of God.

One proponent of changing names of God to Muslim friendly terms told World Magazine in a May 2011 article, "On the day of judgment, will those who might have heard and believed the Gospel stand up to accuse such Christians of hindering their salvation? Only God knows." I would be among the last to knowingly hinder someone's true salvation, but I hope to be counted as among the first to stand for the Word of God, which includes that allah is not YHWH.

End Note: This has been a very eye-opening week covering this story. It has been a "shoot the messenger" week. The personal attacks are very interesting. They range from not having standing to write about the issue because I do not bring the gospel to millions of people as does Wycliffe; another is that this is a very complicated issue and without years of experience, I cannot possibly know what I am talking about; another is that if I haven't lived for 20 years in a Muslim country, I just don't know; another is that I do not know the origin of the word "allah"; another is that as a Christian I should not criticize another Christian; another is that I am attacking and slandering Wycliffe (I guess these intellectuals do not know the difference between slander, the spoken untruthful and malicious action, and libel); another is that allah has been used as YHWH for so long that it is impossible to change it. For people that say you shouldn't criticize other Christians, they have done their fair share of it, some viciously.

In these days there are many errors with what is being taught in Christianity. We need to be able from time to time to have an open discussion about them, examine them and correct them. In reality, there is only one true God if we believe the Bible to be the inerrant and infallible Word of God. He has a name. It is not allah. Allah is a different god, they are not the same. That in of itself is quite simple. The other issues of changing or omitting the familial names are also quite simple. You don't do it. Or if you have to for some reason, you footnote it with an explanation. Then don't do it again.

Just because something has been done for years upon years as a tradition of man, it doesn't mean that it should not be changed if it is wrong. And just because someone has been doing it wrong, it doesn't mean they are evil or bad (many dedicated people have given their lives to this good work), they have been led in error. The problem, however, with interchanging allah with YHWH is that the two are not the same. To do so is wrong. As the one missionary critical of my writing proudly said: "...millions of Arab Christians pour out their hearts in worship and intercession to Allah, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." To him, there is nothing wrong with this and it is quite proper. To me, it is inaccurate to the point it is heresy. There needs to be a correction here. My prayer is that Wycliffe will listen and do the right thing. I am hopeful that there is not another agenda in play. Time will tell.

Iran warns world of coming great event

by Reza Khalili

Says 'evil hegemony' soon will be defeated by power of Allah

Amid crippling sanctions over its nuclear weapons program, Iran is continuing to prepare itself for war against the West, and now is warning of a coming great event.

“In light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated,” Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, is warning.

Khamenei, speaking to hundreds of youths from more than 70 countries attending a world conference on the Arab Spring just days ago, told a cheering crowd in Tehran that “Allah’s promises will be delivered and Islam will be victorious.”

The countries represented included Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Palestine and Tunisia, all of which have been involved in the Arab Spring.

In his remarks, Khamenei advised the youths to remain vigilant, stating that the Islamic awakening in the region has delivered several blows to the enemies of Islam and that all Muslims, despite their own historical and social differences, remain united in opposing the “evil hegemony of the Zionists and the Americans.”

Khamenei then claimed the current century as the century of Islam and promised that human history is on the verge of a great event and that soon the world will realize the power of Allah.

Many clerics in Iran have stated that Khamenei is the deputy of the last Islamic messiah on earth and that obedience to him is necessary for the final glorification of Islam.

Khamenei has been heard to say that the coming of the last Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam Mahdi, is near and that specific actions need to be taken to protect the Islamic regime for upcoming events.

Mahdi, according to Shiite belief, will reappear at the time of Armageddon. Selected forces within the Revolutionary Guards and Basij reportedly have been trained under a task force called “Soldiers of Imam Mahdi” and they will bear the responsibility of security and protecting the regime against uprisings. Many in the Guards and Basij have been told that the 12th Imam is on earth, facilitated the victory of Hezbollah over Israel in the 2006 war and soon will announce publicly his presence after the needed environment is created.

Sources within Vali’eh Amr, the revolutionary forces in charge of the supreme leader’s protection, also recently revealed an assassination attempt on Khamenei that was thwarted just in time.

SepahOnline reports that last year during Khamenei’s visit to the port of Asalouyeh in southern Iran, Revolutionary Guards found pistols and hand grenades hidden by one individual dressed as a janitor in a barracks that Khamenei was set to attend. The supreme leader was then returned to Tehran immediately.

Other sources within the Guards report that following Barack Obama’s letter to the Iranian leader last month requesting negotiations, Khamenei ordered Iranian officials to speak positively about holding nuclear talks and giving hope to Obama and other Western leaders that a negotiated solution is possible.

This was apparent after a trip of U.N. nuclear inspectors to Iran this week, who called the talks positive.

At the same time, his directive to the Guards ordered a speedy completion of the Iranian nuclear bomb program in which Guards’ missiles can be armed with nuclear warheads. Khamenei believes once that’s achieved, Iran can test a nuclear bomb, letting the world know that Iran has joined the nuclear-armed club and that any confrontation will result in destruction of much of the Western world.

The Revolutionary Guards not only can hit all U.S. bases in the Middle East with their ballistic missiles but also reach most capital cities in Western Europe. The Guards, with the help of China and North Korea, are working on intercontinental ballistic missiles. But more dangerous to America, as reported last July, is the Guards action in arming their vessels with long-range ballistic missiles and their expansion of their mission into the Atlantic Ocean, right into the Gulf of Mexico.

Any Iranian military or commercial vessel easily could get right outside the U.S. coastline and in less than 60 seconds fire a ballistic missile armed with a nuclear payload and detonate it over U.S. skies in an electromagnetic attack that would plunge America back into the 18th century.

Studies show within just one year after such an attack, two-thirds of Americans would cease to exist and the rest would live under dire conditions.

The radicals ruling Iran not only have prepared for mass suppression of their own people as they get close to their confrontation with the West, but also have prepared to fuel unrest through their proxies in the Middle East and elsewhere.

SepahOnline, with sources within the Guards, reports that Afghanistan will soon witness an increase in terrorist activities against U.S. forces. The Guards not only are training Taliban fighters in Iran close to the Afghan border, but are shipping armaments to forces in Afghanistan with an order to create instability by harming U.S. forces and destabilizing the Afghan government.

Guards agents have also been ordered to do the same in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf counties.

The Guards also announced the imminent formation of a defensive unit to deal with possible radioactive contamination. Although they did not say why, they could be preparing for a nuclear exchange with the West once Iran becomes nuclear-armed.

WND previously has reported that the chieftains in Iran also are preparing to execute their own internal critics and opponents at the right time.

This was similar to action taken by the founder of the Islamic regime in 1988, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

In the book, “A Time to Betray,” it is documented when Khomeini announced the campaign, he said, “If the person at any stage or at any time maintains his (or her) support for the opposing groups, the sentence is execution. Annihilate the enemies of Islam immediately.”

The fatwa led to the execution of thousands of innocent men and women of all ages in a very short period.

'Panetta believes Israel will strike Iran soon'

US defense secretary estimates Israel likely to strike Iran between April and June – before it reaches 'zone of immunity' in development of nuclear bomb, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius says

by Yitzhak Benhorin

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes that Israel is likely to strike Iran in the coming months, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius said Thursday.

"Panetta believes there is strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June – before Iran enters what Israelis described as a “zone of immunity” to commence building a nuclear bomb," Ignatius wrote.

Asked by journalists whether he disputes the report, Panetta said, "No, I'm just not commenting."

He added, "What I think and what I view, I consider that to be an area that belongs to me and nobody else."

He noted that Israel has stated publicly that it is considering military action against Iran, adding that US has "indicated our concerns."

Panetta, along with US President Barack Obama warned Israeli officials against opting for a military offensive in Iran, saying it would jeopardize the international sanctions program and other non-military efforts to stop Iran from crossing the nuclear "red line."

Even so, Ignatius claimed that senior officials in the Obama administration have yet to decide how to respond if an Israeli military strike materializes.

The columnist states that "Israeli leaders are said to accept, and even welcome, the prospect of going it alone and demonstrating their resolve at a time when their security is undermined by the 'Arab Spring'."

Another strike in a few years

The Israeli scenario, according to Ignatius, is a five day limited offensive, followed by a UN-brokered ceasefire. The relatively light damage that is expected to be inflicted on Iranian nuclear facilities will require Israel to stage another offensive a few years down the line.

Ignatius notes that American officials see two possible options to dissuade Israel from attacking: Serious talks with Iran – including full access and supervision over its nuclear program – or increased US covert operations that will undermine the nuclear program to the extent that Israel is convinced an attack is no longer necessary.

However, such options might be in vein because Prime Minister Netanyahu has already made a decision to attack in the next six months, Ignatius claims.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday said that if sanctions are unsuccessful in compelling Iran to abandon its nuclear program, the international community will have to examine other options.

"There is a global understanding that if the sanctions don't achieve the coveted goal of stopping the Iranian military nuclear program, an operation would have to be considered," he said at the Herzliya Conference.
