Egypt: Mubarak 'under house arrest,' election to be held 'in September'
Cairo, (AKI) - Egypt's military on Monday said former president Hosni Mubarak is under house arrest, according to Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm reports.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which temporarily took power when Mubarak stepped down in February.
The report said that the Council, in a statement on its Facebook page, denied some local reports that Mubarak had gone to Saudi Arabia three days ago for medical treatment.
Mubarak is at his residence in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh. He and his family are banned from travelling.
Separately, Gen. Mamdou Shahen of the Council on Monday said Egypt will hold parliamentary elections in September, followed by balloting for the first new president in more than three decades.
Shahen said the elections would not be held under Egypt's emergency law, though he did not specify when the law would be lifted. He also announced a ban on the formation of political parties on a religious, sectarian or geographic basis.
